Here’s what Canada wants from NAFTA — and where we may clash

OTTAWA — The Canadian government’s goals for modernizing NAFTA include preserving the pact’s dispute settlement mechanism, Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Monday, setting up a potential clash with the United States.

In a speech today, Freeland shared a half-dozen NAFTA goals for the talks that start Wednesday — including stronger labour standards and tougher environmental protection provisions.

She says Ottawa also aims to cut down on bureaucracy and harmonize regulations to ease the flow of cross-border business.
