Canada Post Reports Small Profit as Job Action Looms



As Canada Post’s biggest union prepares to launch limited job action Monday to press contract demands, the crown corporation has released its second-quarter results showing it managed to turn a small profit.

The post office reported a $1-million profit before tax, for the three months ending on July 2, a much better showing than a year ago, when it had a $31-million loss. For the first half of the year, Canada Post had a before-tax profit of $45 million, compared to a loss of $7 million in the same period in 2015.

Canada Post spokesman Jon Hamilton dismissed the suggestion that the post office was profitable, calling it a “break-even” quarter, boosted by 27 million pieces of mail for the census and increased parcel shipping.

He attributed the better performance to previous business transformation efforts, including hiking stamp prices and switching some customers from door-to-door home delivery to community mailboxes.

When affiliated companies like Purolator Courier are included, then the overall profit before tax jumps to $9 million, compared to a loss of $4 million in the same period in 2015.

Mike Palecek, national president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, said the results were “surprisingly good,” and would have been even better, if the company hadn’t driven away business at the end of June with talk of a postal disruption.

The company’s pension solvency deficit has ballooned to $8.1 billion from $6.1 billion at the end of 2015, showing why the company is pushing to move all new hires to a defined contribution pension from the current defined benefit pension.

But union officials point out that deficit only refers to if the plan were wound up – if the post office were to go bankrupt – and that the plan actually has a $1.2-billion surplus on go-forward basis. Palecek said the solvency test is usually only calculated once a year, so the company is coming up with its own numbers.

The union is refusing to back down on the pension issue as well as a push to equalize pay between rural and urban carriers.

Palecek said the job action shouldn’t have much of an impact, because members will refuse to do overtime, in one province each day for only a day.

He said the company is trying to provoke a walkout by changing working conditions, cancelling vacations and axing Employment Insurance top-off pay for women on maternity leave.

“They are trying to provoke us into walking out,” said Palecek, who said there are no plans for that right now. “But there is a limit to what we can take.”

Hamilton said by filing the strike action, the collective agreement no longer applies. The company will continue to pay workers at the usual rate of pay and cover benefits like dental and drug costs, but other items have been eliminated including maternity leave top-off pay.

Individuals booked for vacation can reschedule their holidays, but those who go on vacation will not be paid.

The two parties are back at the negotiating table, this time with special mediator William Kaplan, appointed by Labour Minister MaryAnn Mihychuk on Thursday. The parties have been in negotiations for months with little progress, with both sides saying there are far apart.

Canada Post’s Hamilton added that the impact of the threat of job action will be seen in the third quarter results, when individuals and businesses stop using the mail service over fears of a disruption.

“The union may be using soothing words” about not wanting to shut down the postal service,” said Hamilton said. “But come Monday, the union will have the ability to disruption the post office any way they want.”

He couldn’t say what impact the union’s move to refuse overtime will have on operations, saying that could vary depending location, noting it is a busy time of year for back-to-school online shopping. As well, overtime is used when someone calls in sick.

Description: Provide administrative and general human resources support.

Education: Grade 10. No previous work experience or related career skills are required.

Duties: In addition to human resources administration and services, you’ll be handling pay and allowances, managing automated pay systems, and maintaining personnel records.

Work environment: HR administrators work at all CAF bases in Canada. They also work on ships and overseas to support the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Navy, or Royal Canadian Air Force operations.

Medical assistant

Description: Successful candidates will help treat the sick and injured in CAF units. You’ll be assisting and supporting nursing and medical officers.

Duties: You’ll provide initial care and essential life support treatments in trauma cases. You’ll help with health assessments (hearing and vision tests, perform basic lab procedures, etc.) and initiate and manage medical records and reports. You’ll also be expected to provide support and first aid during training exercises.

Work environment: Medical assistants may serve with the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force or the Canadian Army as part of the Canadian Forces Health Services Group. Those in this role are exposed to the same risks as the forces they support.

Porter’s new loyalty program promises to match Air Canada’s Aeroplan status



Porter Airlines is once again stirring the pot among Canadian airline rivals, now going after Air Canada’s Aeroplan members by offering to match their loyalty status to an equivalent of their own.

The beloved airline, which recently ranked as having the best cabin service in North America, challenged the competition for the second time this year, after previously deploying a similar tactic against WestJet in the spring. 

Earlier in April, Porter presented customers with a limited-time offer to match the loyalty status of WestJet’s patrons with VIPorter levels.

Now, they’re offering Aeroplan members to seamlessly transition to an equivalent VIPorter Avid Traveller status based on their existing membership tier.

Members can then take advantage of an array of travel perks that come with flying Porter, including seat selection, baggage, and flight changes.

For those currently holding an Aeroplan membership, there are two ways to acquire the Avid Traveller status for the rest of 2023:

Status-Based Match:
  • Aeroplan 25K members = VIPorter Venture
  • Aeroplan 35K members = VIPorter Ascent
  • Aeroplan 50K, 75K, and Super Elite = VIPorter First
Flight Segments-Based Match:
